The Perils and Pleasures of Point-of-View

Point-of-view is one of the most complex elements of fiction. Before you begin your novel or short story, you need to know who your narrator is, who the audience is, how the narrative is being communicated, what time has passed between the story's events and its telling, and what constraints your point-of-view has. Yes, it’s a lot to consider, but understanding the answers to those questions is the first step to writing rich and compelling fiction. In this talk, I will discuss different types of points of view and the pain and beauty of their various limitations. We’ll read work from published authors as examples and end with a short exercise to get us thinking more deeply about narrative perspective.

Tucson Festival of Books

I’m thrilled to attend the Tucson Festival of Books, where I’ll be moderating and paneling. Here’s the full schedule. Below, you’ll find my events.

Scheduled events:

History Mystery

Books by Cara Black, John Copenhaver and Karen Odden take us back -- way back -- and give us a glimpse at murder and mayhem through the ages. How much historical research must they do? How are history mysteries different? So many questions!

Mystery / Thrillers
Signing area: Sales & Signing Area - UA BookStore Tent (on Mall) (following presentation)

Meet John Sandford and Robert Crais

Out of the Past Mystery

Incredibly, people managed to unravel mysteries and solve crimes even before the advent of the internet or the high-tech tools we first saw on CSI TV. John Copenhaver, Dianne Freeman and Iona Whishaw have come to the festival with characters who figured things out the old-fashioned way!

Koffler Room 216 (Seats 89, Wheelchair accessible)

Mystery / Thrillers
Signing area: Sales & Signing Area - UA BookStore Tent (on Mall) (following presentation)
