Drop by and say hi if you’re in the area!
Mark your calendars. I'm part of an amazing group of writers for this one—S.A. Cosby, Robert Creekmore, James Grady, Vera Kurian, Eliza Nellums, K.T. Nguyen, and the host with the most, Ed Aymar. We'll be at the Looking Glass Lounge and reading dark (and at times funny) sh*t. 😂 Join us, won't you?
Join Alma Katsu and me at WordPlay as we discuss our most recent works, our publishing journeys, and the joys and challenges of writing thrillers.
The June 21 event at WordPlay is free; no registration required. Copies of both authors’ newest books and backlist titles will be available for purchase and signing. A portion of all book sales during the event will support Lost River Pride. For more information, email info@wordplaywv.com. WordPlay is located at 50 West Main Street, Wardensville WV.

I’m teaching a seminar at Craftfest called “Writing LGBTQ+ Characters,” and I’m moderating a panel called "First, Third or Multiple? POV In Popular Fiction.”
I’ll be a panelist at Left Coast Crime speaking on “Why We Can No Longer Avoid Politics In Fiction (as if we ever could),” and I’m moderating the Guest of Honor Closing Panel with this year’s guests of honor, Wanda Morris, Robert Dugoni, Megan Abbott, and Fran Fuller.
Point-of-view is one of the most complex elements of fiction. Before you begin your novel or short story, you need to know who your narrator is, who the audience is, how the narrative is being communicated, what time has passed between the story's events and its telling, and what constraints your point-of-view has. Yes, it’s a lot to consider, but understanding the answers to those questions is the first step to writing rich and compelling fiction. In this talk, I will discuss different types of points of view and the pain and beauty of their various limitations. We’ll read work from published authors as examples and end with a short exercise to get us thinking more deeply about narrative perspective.
Come out for a spooktacularly good time at Barnes & Noble. There will be vampires, werewolves, ghosts, aliens, and, perhaps, a murderous femme fatale—or two!
Margot Douaihy, Robyn Gigl, Cheryl Head, Laurie King, Lev A.C. Rosen, and I discuss the craft of writing complex LGBTQ characters with compassion and nuance.
Looking forward to the Murderous March (Virtual) Conference in March w/ Guest of Honor Deborah Crombie. I'll be on a panel with the fabulous Carol Goodman, Alan S. Orloff, Richie Narvaez, and Robin Stevens. Moderated by Tina deBellegarde.
If I weren't on this panel, I'd be attending it!
I’m thrilled to attend the Tucson Festival of Books, where I’ll be moderating and paneling. Here’s the full schedule. Below, you’ll find my events.

Out of the Past Mystery
